Description

Circle of Control Board is a hands-on tool designed to help children understand the important concept of control, teaching them to focus on what they can directly manage in their lives. This interactive material introduces three concentric circles, each representing a different level of control:

Circle of Control: The innermost circle, representing things children can directly control—such as their actions, thoughts, and responses.
Circle of Influence: The middle circle, representing things they can impact but not directly control—such as other people’s actions or certain outcomes.
Circle of Concern: The outermost circle, representing things they may worry about but cannot control—like global events or others' opinions.

How It Works:
Children are provided with 19 scenario coins, each representing a specific situation (e.g., "My body," "Election," "Volcanic Eruption"). They are tasked with sorting these coins into the appropriate circles based on the level of control they have over each scenario. The hands-on sorting activity turns an abstract concept into a concrete, visual experience, making it easier for children to grasp. Having this material on the classroom shelf normalizes discussions around control and worry, creating a safe space where children can explore their feelings without judgment. As an extension, teachers can encourage children to anonymously write down their personal worries in a "Worry Jar." The class can then discuss these worries, helping children understand which are within their control and offering strategies for managing them.

Educational Benefits:
Emotional Resilience: By identifying what they can and cannot control, children learn to let go of unnecessary worries and focus on their own actions.
Problem-Solving: Children develop critical thinking skills by evaluating each scenario and determining the appropriate circle.
Self-Awareness: The activity encourages children to reflect on their feelings and understand the limits of their influence.
Stress Management: Children learn to focus on actionable areas, reducing anxiety about things beyond their control.

Normalization of Control Discussions: Keeping this material on the shelf makes conversations about control, influence, and concern a natural part of the classroom environment, helping children understand these concepts without stigma.

This board is an excellent addition to any classroom’s social-emotional learning curriculum, providing a clear, tangible way for children to develop self-regulation and emotional intelligence.
